You aren’t shy, insecure or incompetent

This might sound familiar

For years, I believed I was just not as naturally confident as everyone around me. They seemingly effortlessly asked the questions that I had been overthinking. They didn’t almost physically succumb to their nerves when giving a presentation. They actually were connecting at networking events, instead of just awkwardly hanging about the food court. Worse, they truly seemed to enjoy it!

If you recognise any of this… I’ve been there:

  • Rehearsing a conversation before it's even happened, then replaying it again after

  • Telling yourself "if I'm not 100% sure, I shouldn't say it"

  • Overpreparing so you're never wrong, then still not feeling ready

  • Staying quiet in the meeting, then regretting it the second it's over

  • Watching someone less capable get the opportunity you talked yourself out of

It feels like it’s just who you are

Just shy. Just quiet. Just not leadership material.

And I know where you’re coming from. If, like me, you spent enormous amounts of effort to change your behaviour, to even “fake it till you make it” or otherwise try to posture in a confident manner, you’ll probably have come to the same conclusion as I did: it doesn’t work. You always revert back to the safety of silence and invisibility. Slightly more frustrated with yourself every time it happens.

But I can tell you from experience:

You can own your voice in the moments that matter, in a way that feels like you.

You just need to redirect your time and effort to where it actually makes a difference.
